Walking Shoes Are a Requirement to Prevent Sore FeetIf you do a lot of walking, either for pleasure or for work, you know the importance of a good pair or walking shoes. Walking shoes need to provide good support to prevent foot, ankle, leg, or back pain. People who spend much of their time on their feet like doctors, nurse, waitresses, and postal workers, many times have to forego fashion to find a good comfortable pair of shoes. These professions don’t allow for painful shoes! When you are vacationing, it is imperative that you have a comfortable pair of walking shoes. On a recent trip, we spent 5 hours walking around New York City seeing all the sights. I was glad that I had a comfortable pair of walking shoes. While my shoes will not be seen in the latest high-fashion magazine, they are quite comfortable and allow me to enjoy walking for hours at a stretch. This is not to say that a good pair of walking shoes must be ugly things you wouldn't wear for anything but walking or hiking. In the United States, people don't generally walk as much as people in other countries. Walking shoes can actually border on the stylish, but with the benefit and value of true comfort. Once you've returned from a long hike in the mountain or lengthy stroll in the park, and find you need to soak your feet to relieve the pain of your afternoon's fun, you'll be in the market for a good pair of walking shoes. Walking Shoes Buying Guide Look for a walking shoe constructed of soft leather and shaped like your foot. It should have a thick sole with lots of support and cushioning to prevent sending jarring steps up into your hips and spine. This is your best bet for the traveler who will be walking miles in the course of their vacation. A slipper style with laces is best suited to this type of walking. Laced shoes allow you to tighten firmly around your foot. A slipper-shaped walking shoe means the shoe should have a firm sole and rounded toe with a proper fit in length. If you are an avid hiker and enjoy more rugged terrain in the mountains and in the great outdoors, your requirements in a walking shoe will need to include a higher cuff to give the support you'll need in your ankles. Depending upon how often you hike, the relative softness or stiffness should stand up to the wear you'll give the shoes. If you'll be trekking through the wilderness and camping in the snow, you'll want thicker leather with waterproofing. This type of walking shoe may require that you break them in on short jaunts before subjecting your feet to miles of walking in a brand new pair of walking shoes. If your profession requires that you be on your feet for a full eight hours every day, such as in the case of a nurse or waitress, there are shoes designed especially for this purpose. These styles of walking shoes tend to be more utilitarian and less fashionable. However, they are also carefully designed to give you the comfort you need to avoid foot problems over time. Again, soft leather with firm support and toe sections which are rounded, just like your foot, are the best. There are many manufacturers of these types of walking shoes that are now making shoes in many attractive styles. Whatever your walking activities may entail, if you walk extensively, be sensible and look for an attractive and above all, comfortable pair of walking shoes. Your feet will thank you! Your local show store should stock a wide variety of fashionable walking shoes. And if you can’t find them locally, there are many online shoe stores that cater to the person who spends much of their time of their feet. |
