Sick Building Syndrome A Growing Problem

There is a growing problem concerned with modern buildings, which leads to a lot of discomfort and anxiety. Called Sick Building Syndrome, it usually involves office buildings but has been known to occur in people's homes and other types of building. It began as a puzzling phenomenon but we know more about it now. When symptoms appear that indicate the condition, it is important to identify the cause. Sometimes, this takes a long time and it can be a trial and error affair in helping people get rid of the problem.

Typical symptoms that affect people are headaches, sore throats, nausea, dry cough or eye irritation. Skin can also feel dry and sore and there can be a general feeling of tiredness. These Sick Building Syndrome symptoms can cause lack of concentration, low morale amongst staff and irritability. It's advisable for management to deal with the problem as quickly as possible. Absenteeism can be another consequence of the condition and a decrease in productivity will have economic consequences. Some people will be more affected than others, as sensitivity levels will vary.

The reason for problems in buildings may be down to one or more causes. There may be pollutants in the atmosphere due to poor ventilation or a malfunctioning heating system. Lack of natural light can be another factor. Equipment such as computer monitors or the photocopier can contribute. In the past, some people have doubted the existence of Sick Building Syndrome but it's generally believed to be a genuine problem with specific causes.

After identifying the reason for the problem and the source of any pollution or contamination, it's then time to find a solution. Sometimes, it's appropriate to make radical changes such as replacing the ventilation, lighting or heating systems. Some companies have brought in new computer networks or replaced ceiling tiles and flooring materials. In some cases, all that was needed was the implementation of a no smoking policy. Whether it's a simple or complex solution that's needed, the workforce will be very grateful to get rid of Sick Building Syndrome. They can at last look forward to going into work, instead of dreading it.

When people find they have symptoms associated with the problem, it is soon apparent that it's Sick Building Syndrome when it only occurs in the office. If the boss doesn't believe you, seek written statements from colleagues who may share your discomfort. You don't have to suffer in silence.

Many people don't believe in sick building syndrome or in sick buildings. This could be because they don't understand what it is therefore they assume it can't be true, or, they may hold an upper management position and know that remeditating the problem may cost the company a lot of money. In either case, science has proved time and time again that sick building syndrome is a reality.
