Power Walking for Weight Loss and Fitness

Exercise is a topic that's always in the news. The abundance of exercise programs and routines make it almost impossible to ever know which one is right for you. While one is deemed the best one day, the next day they are explaining why it's harmful to your body. These so-called experts seem to have trouble getting their facts straight. With exercise regimes and diets galore invading our media on a regular basis, we feel a certain need to stay fit. More and more we hear doctors telling us about the horrible shape our country is in. Well, at least we always have one exercise that we know works, and that's good old fashioned walking. However, these days walking has been evolved into a trendy, calorie dropping exercise called power walking.

If you've ever seen someone strutting down the sidewalk or through the shopping mall in a energetic-like fashion, but weren't sure why they were walking like it was a big deal, you probably witnessed power walking. Now I have to admit, the first time I encountered a power walker was in the mall. It was very early, just before all of the stores had opened. The mall was virtually empty other than my wife and I. Suddenly I see this middle-aged woman who looked physically fit and full of energy, pacing toward us with a wild stride and a flicker of determination in her eye. I started to snicker, but my wife nudged me. She let me in on the concept of power walking. I didn't realize it was such a great way to burn calories and get fit.

If you are looking for a simple exercise that won't cost you a penny, you may want to try power walking. While walking alone burns calories, power walking gets the job done much faster. This is a way to really get the heart pumping. While many people don't know it, running can be hard on your body. When you run, you jar the body with each stride. This in turn rattles your organs over time, and can actually shift them. In addition, it is very damaging to your knees. Power walking, on the other hand, can actually allow your body to burn more calories than running, but without hurting yourself in the long run. If power walking sounds like the exercise for you, check online and you can find additional information on this wonderful way to drop pounds and get in shape. The best part about power walking is that it won't break the bank.

If you live in an area of the country where the weather doesn’t always allow walking outdoors, check with your local shopping mall. Many malls in our area have Power Walking Clubs that meet in the morning an hour or thirty minutes before the stores open. This is a win-win situation! Imagine, getting your thirty minutes of exercise done and get your shopping finished just as the stores open and before the crowds arrive. You may even make new friends once you start your power walking routine.

Power Walking Tip

Be sure to start out your power walking regimen slowly and build-up your endurance. A marathon runner trains by taking a first step and then increasing mileage each week. The same is true for power walking. Start with 5 or 10 minutes the first couple of times you exercise. (And if you can only do a minute or two this first time, that is alright as well. The important thing is to start slowly.) Then, over the course of weeks, gradually increase the amount of time you walk and the intensity of your workout. This will help prevent injury and help stave off discouragement.
