Use a Knee Brace for Support, Healing and Recovery

Your knees take a beating each day. Athletes are more prone to knee injuries than most of us, but it can happen to anyone. People who have active jobs can experience knee injury or pain, as do people like postal workers who walk for a living. Even sitting at your computer in the wrong position can bring on pain in the knees. For many people, they need knee braces to hold the knee in place long enough for the damage to heal.

Some people experience knee pain if they have to drive a lot. Driving holds the knee at an awkward angle for long periods of time. This can cause fatigue and stiffness in the knee. A good knee brace will help support the knee when you are sitting in the same position for many hours.

Good knee braces support the knee, and hold everything in the proper position. Many knee injuries are the result of the knee being moved violently or repeatedly in an awkward position, and the supporting tissue around the knee weakens, tears, or in some cases, snaps. A proper knee brace allows for range of motion while the knee heals, even if it is somewhat limited motion. You can buy knee braces just about everywhere, but make sure you are getting one that will support your knee. Some aren’t strong enough, and you may not get the support you need. The best places to find quality knee braces are at a medical supply store, pharmacy, or by advice of your doctor.

Depending on the extent of the damage to your knee, you may need to use crutches along with knee braces. These are meant to keep your weight from resting on your damaged knees, so if it is advised that you use them, make sure you do. If you don’t, you could be doing more damage to your knees, and thus the knee braces won’t be helping you at all. Many types can be worn under your clothes, and no one has to see them. You may walk a little stiffly, but you won’t get hit with a barrage of questions like, “What happened to you?” Many knee braces are also adjustable, and come in different sizes. Some cover a six-inch area, while others will go up your thigh and down your calf, offering more support, but very little movement. If your doctor tells you to wear this type of brace, you know you have some extensive damage.

If you are experiencing knee pain, but aren’t sure if you need knee braces, you should visit with your doctor. If you are experiencing pain when you drive, after sitting for a period, or if it hurts you to stand from a squatting or sitting position, you may want to consider that something is wrong. If the pain isn’t too severe, you may just have to wear knee braces for a few weeks to help the area heal.

Knee Injury Tip

When recovering from a knee injury, be sure to take it easy during physical therapy. A knee can usually heal back to 100% of where it was before an injury but only if you don't injure it more during recovery. Take it slow and if you feel any pain, stop. Pain is not a normal part of the recovery and healing process.
